The sides were paired together in Group B in the 2023/24 group stage, OL Lyonnes winning 2-0 in France on Matchday 2 and 7-0 in Austria on Matchday 5, the latter St. Pölten's joint-heaviest defeat in European competition. Ada Hegerberg – the all-time leading scorer in UEFA club competition – scored twice in the second fixture, while Kadidiatou Diani also struck for the French side.
That made it three wins from three for OL against Austrian teams, with 17 goals scored and none conceded.
St. Pölten have lost all four games against French teams, their only other fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2018/19 round of 32, where they lost 1-4 at home and 0-2 away.
OL have been crowned champions of Europe on eight occasions from 11 finals – both competition records. Their last success came when they defeated Barcelona 3-1 in the 2022 final in Turin.
The French outfit finished with a 100% record in last season's group stage ahead of Wolfsburg, Roma and Galatasaray. They eased past Bayern in the quarter-finals (2-0 a, 4-1 h) before a semi-final elimination at the hands of winners Arsenal (2-1 a, 1-4 h).
This is the fourth successive season in which St. Pölten have come through qualifying to reach the group stage/league phase, although they first featured in the Women's Champions League in 2013/14. They lost all six Group D games last season as they finished behind Barcelona (0-7 a, 1-4 h), Manchester City (2-3 h, 0-2 a) and Hammarby (0-2 a, 1-2 h).
A 5-2 aggregate defeat of Danish side Fortuna (3-1 h, 2-1 a) in this season's third qualifying round sealed St. Pölten's league phase berth, Carina Brunold scoring twice in the home first leg.
