Women's Champions League Matchday 6: Twente vs Real Madrid facts

The final matchday of the league phase in the UEFA Women's Champions League pits Twente against Real Madrid in Enschede.

While the Dutch side have two points from their first five fixtures and can no longer reach the knockout stage, Madrid are in fifth place in the league phase on ten points and are already assured of a place in the quarter-finals or knockout phase play-offs.

Last match

Drawn together in Group B last season, María Méndez scored twice and Signe Bruun, Naomie Feller and Caroline Weir once each as Madrid won 7-0 in Spain on Matchday 3. Bruun found the net in the Spanish side's 3-2 victory in Enschede a week later, Linda Caicedo and Alba Redondo also scoring for the visitors with Jaimy Ravensbergen and Sophie Te Brake on target for Twente.

Twente lost 0-4 at home to Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 4 this season and have suffered seven defeats in their eight matches against Spanish teams, the only exception a 3-2 round 1 final victory against Levante in Enschede in September 2023.

Real Madrid have never faced another Dutch side in UEFA competition.

Twente

Twente finished third in Group B last season, beating Celtic twice (2-0 a, 3-0 h) but losing both games to Chelsea (1-3 h, 1-6 a) and Real Madrid on their group stage debut. They reached the round of 16 on three occasions under a previous format of the competition, most recently in 2019/20 when they lost 0-7 on aggregate to eventual runners-up Wolfsburg (0-6 a, 0-1 h).

The Dutch side began their European campaign this season in the second qualifying round, beating Crvena Zvezda (6-0) and Breidablik (2-0) before an 8-1 aggregate success against Polish side Katowice (4-0 a, 4-1 h) in the third qualifying round.

Real Madrid

Madrid reached the quarter-finals last season for the first time since their debut in 2021/22, losing to champions Arsenal (2-0 h, 0-3 a) after finishing second in a group containing Chelsea, Twente and Celtic.

Madrid made it through qualifying to reach the group stage in each of their last four entries, and followed suit for the inaugural league phase this season. Entering at the third qualifying round, the Spanish side progressed with a 5-1 aggregate triumph against Eintracht Frankfurt (2-1 a, 3-0 h).

Twente's 0-1 defeat at Arsenal on Matchday 5 made it just one win from their last ten group stage/league phase matches (D2 L7).

Jill Roord could become the first Dutch player to make 70 appearances in UEFA women's club competition.

Madrid have won 12 of their last 17 European matches (D1 L4), including against Roma (6-2 h), Paris Saint-Germain (2-1 a) and, on Matchday 5, Wolfsburg (2-0 h) in this season's league phase.

Madrid have got the opening goal in six of their seven Women's Champions League games this season, the exception a 1-1 Matchday 3 draw at home against Paris FC.
