Ferreira takes charge of Porto

FC Porto have appointed Jesualdo Ferreira as Co Adriaanse's successor just three days after he stood down as coach of city rivals Boavista FC.

European qualification
Ferreira, 60, leaves Boavista without having taken charge of a single competitive match. In May he replaced Carlos Brito on a two-year contract after impressing the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI management with his handling of SC Braga. His three-and-a-half year stay in Braga culminated in qualification for this season's UEFA Cup via a fourth-placed finish in the Liga. Ferreira previously coached SL Benfica between 2001 and 2003.

New season
Porto's former coach Adriaanse resigned on 9 August despite having led the club to the Portuguese double in his first and only season at the Dragão. Ex-Porto player Rui Barros replaced the Dutchman in a caretaker capacity to help the team prepare for the start of their title defence on 27 August, a responsibility which now lies with Ferreira and his assistant Carlos Azenha. Porto, the 2004 UEFA Champions League winners, enter this season's competition at the group stage.
