Manchester City bring in Fernando from Porto

Manchester City FC have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Fernando from FC Porto.

A fee of €15m has been widely reported, though City have not revealed the amount they have paid or length of contract the 26-year-old has agreed. The Brazilian – yet to be capped by his country – becomes the Citizens' second signing of the summer, following the arrival of France right-back Bacary Sagna.

Speaking to the City website, Fernando, who will wear the No6 shirt vacated by Joleon Lescott, said: "I am delighted that the deal has been done and that I am a City player. I am looking forward to meeting my team-mates and helping City defend the title.

"It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career. I am looking forward to many happy years in Manchester."

Fernando moved to Porto from his homeland in 2007 and enjoyed a successful seven-year spell with the Dragons, winning four league titles and two Portuguese Cups, as well as lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in 2011. He amassed 34 UEFA Champions League appearances during his time at the club, reaching the quarter-finals in 2008/09, when Porto were eliminated by City's rivals Manchester United FC.
