AS Roma have bolstered their UEFA Champions League-bound squad by signing Urby Emanuelson on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract with AC Milan.

The 28-year-old left-back is moving to the Italian capital club on an initial 12-month deal, with the option to extend those terms by two further seasons. The Dutch international – last capped in November 2012 – becomes the Giallorossi's fourth summer recruit after Seydou Keita, Salih Uçan and Ashley Cole.

"I have a lot of expectations for next season, I'm very happy to be in Rome," said the versatile Emanuelson, who joins compatriot Kevin Strootman at the Stadio Olimpico. The AFC Ajax academy product had been with Milan since January 2011, making 75 Serie A appearances and winning the Scudetto and Italian Super Cup during his first year.

A UEFA European Under-21 Championship winner in 2006, the defender cum left-winger also spent six months loaned to Fulham FC during the 2012/13 campaign. Roma return to the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since 2010/11 after finishing second in Italy last term.
