Sorín deepens Hamburg gloom

Argentina defender Juan Pablo Sorín may miss the remainder of Hamburger SV's UEFA Champions League campaign after tearing a muscle in his right thigh.

Argentina defender Juan Pablo Sorín may miss the remainder of Hamburger SV's UEFA Champions League campaign after tearing a muscle in his right thigh.

Tear confirmed
The 30-year-old, a summer signing from Villarreal CF, sustained the injury during Saturday's 1-0 Bundesliga defeat at northern rivals VfL Wolfsburg. Coach Thomas Doll had hoped it was just a pulled muscle, but scans have confirmed a tear, meaning Sorín will be out of action for up to four weeks, joining Nigel de Jong, Guy Demel, Raphael Wicky, Bastian Reinhardt, Vincent Kompany and Collin Benjamin on the sidelines.

Certain elimination
Sorín is sure to sit out Hamburg's Matchday 5 trip to Arsenal FC and possibly the Matchday 6 visit of PFC CSKA Moskva, having played in three Group G games to date. Hamburg will be eliminated from European competition at the end of the group stage, having yet to register a point in the pool and trailing third-placed FC Porto by seven points with six to play for.
