Monaco will be reminded of one of their most famous European nights as Manchester City return to the Stade Louis II on UEFA Champions League Matchday 2.

Last match

The teams' only previous meetings came in the 2016/17 Champions League round of 16, when Monaco progressed on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate draw. John Stones scored City's fourth goal in a 5-3 home first-leg win before a 3-1 Monaco victory at Stade Louis II, Kylian Mbappé and Radamel Falcao both scoring twice in the tie for the French side.

Monaco have lost only one of their last nine home European matches against English teams (W6 D2), winning the last three – most recently 1-0 against Aston Villa on Matchday 7 last season.

City have lost two of their last three games against French clubs, going down 2-4 at Paris Saint-Germain on Matchday 7 in 2024/25 – a game in which they had led 2-0. That made it successive losses in France, where they have won twice in seven visits (D2 L3).

Monaco

This is Monaco's 11th appearance in the Champions League proper – last season was their first since 2018/19.

The French club finished 17th in the league phase last season (W4 D1 L3) before being eliminated by Benfica in the knockout phase play-offs (0-1 h, 3-3 a).

Manchester City

This is City's 15th successive season in the Champions League proper; they have featured in every campaign since 2011/12 and have reached the knockout stages in each of the last 12.

Having finished 22nd in last season's league phase (W3 D2 L3), City lost to holders Real Madrid in the knockout phase play-offs (2-3 h, 1-3 a).

Key stats

A 4-1 loss at Club Brugge on Matchday 1 made it one win in Monaco's last seven Champions League matches (D1 L5).

Monaco have won five of their last six home games in a European group stage/league phase (L1).

City have lost their last four away Champions League matches.

The Cityzens were 2-0 winners at home to Napoli on Matchday 1 and have lost only three of their last 21 group stage/league phase fixtures (W14 D4).

Against Napoli, Erling Haaland scored his 50th Champions League goal in his 49th appearance. The most goals scored by any player in his first 50 Champions League games is Ruud van Nistelrooy with 43.
