Eintracht Frankfurt and Liverpool are both hoping to get back on track after UEFA Champions League defeats when they meet in Germany on Matchday 3.

Last match

The teams' only previous meetings came in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup first round, a 2-0 home win for Liverpool – Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes getting the goals – followed by a 0-0 draw in Germany as the English club went on to lift the trophy.

Frankfurt are without a win in four games against Premier League clubs (D2 L2), losing 1-2 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur in last season's UEFA Europa League quarter-finals (1-1 a, 0-1 h). That was only their second home defeat by English visitors (W3 D4); home and away, Frankfurt have five wins in 17 games (D6 L6).

Liverpool are unbeaten in 14 matches against German teams (W11 D3), since a 2-4 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen in the 2001/02 Champions League quarter-final second leg. They have won their last five – and eight of the last nine – most recently beating Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield on Matchday 4 last season, their fourth successive clean sheet.

Frankfurt

Frankfurt's only previous participation in the Champions League came in 2022/23 when – as Europa League holders – they went on to reach the round of 16.

The German club were Europa League quarter-finalists in 2024/25, losing 1-2 on aggregate to eventual champions Tottenham.

Liverpool

This is Liverpool's 17th Champions League campaign; they have reached the final five times, lifting the trophy in 2005 and 2019.

The Merseysiders were first in last season's league phase (W7 L1) but went out on penalties to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

Key stats

Hugo Ekitiké joined Liverpool from Frankfurt this summer. The 23-year-old striker scored 26 goals in 64 matches across his two seasons in Germany.

Having won 5-1 at home to Galatasaray on Matchday 1, Frankfurt went down by the same scoreline at Atlético de Madrid last time out.

Frankfurt have won five of their last six home European games (L1) and have lost only one of the last ten in the group stage/league phase (W7 D2), winning the last four.

All but one of Frankfurt's last 67 European matches have featured at least one goal.

Despite losing 1-0 at Galatasaray on Matchday 2, Liverpool have won 13 of their last 15 Champions League group stage/league phase matches (L2) – although they have been beaten in the last two away.

None of Liverpool's last 28 European group stage/league phase matches finished in a draw.

Mohamed Salah needs two goals to become the first African to score 50 in the Champions League.
