Successive defeats have left PSV Eindhoven's UEFA Champions League prospects in the balance as they finish their league phase campaign at home against Bayern München, who have already made sure of a place in the round of 16.

PSV go into Matchday 8 in 22nd place in the standings on eight points; Bayern, by contrast, are second on 18, three points behind Arsenal – the only team to deny them victory in the 2025/26 competition.

Last match

Bayern have won six of the eight meetings between the sides, losing only one. Their most recent encounters came in the 2016/17 group stage, Bayern winning 4-1 in Munich – Joshua Kimmich scoring the second goal – and 2-1 in Eindhoven.

PSV are without a win in five matches against German clubs (D2 L3), drawing 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 2.

That 2016 reverse against Bayern is PSV's only loss in their last five games at home to Bundesliga visitors (W3 D1).

Bayern have not won in three games against Dutch opponents (D2 L1), a 3-0 defeat at Feyenoord in the most recent – on Matchday 7 last season – ending an eight-game unbeaten run (W4 D4).

That was only Bayern's third defeat in 19 matches against Dutch teams (W10 D6) but made it one win in their last seven away games at Eredivisie clubs (D3 L3).

PSV

Dutch champions for the 26th time – and second season in succession – in 2024/25, PSV are in the Champions League proper for the 19th time, a national record they share with Ajax.

Peter Bosz's side were 14th in last season's league phase (W4 D2 L2) and beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate in the knockout phase play-offs – their first victory in a knockout tie since 2006/07 – but were then defeated by Arsenal in the round of 16 (1-7 h, 2-2 a).

Bayern

Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds every time. This is their 29th campaign, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 30).

Twelfth in last season's league phase (W5 L3), the German club eventually lost 3-4 on aggregate to Inter in the quarter-finals.

Key stats

Having been unbeaten in four league phase matches (W2 D2), PSV have lost the last two.

The 3-0 Matchday 7 defeat at Newcastle was PSV's fifth in their last 20 group stage/league phase games (W8 D7) and only the second time in that sequence they had failed to score.

PSV have won only two of their last nine Champions League matches (D3 L4).

Ricardo Pepi has scored in PSV's last two home league phase matches.

PSV's Ismael Saibari celebrates his 25th birthday on the day of this match.

Bayern were 2-0 victors at home to Union Saint-Gilloise on Matchday 7, their tenth win in 12 league phase matches (L2).

Harry Kane got both goals and has now scored 26 goals in 32 Champions League appearances for Bayern after 21 in 32 for Tottenham.

Kane has seven goals in seven Champions League games this season.

Kane scored in Spurs' 2-2 draw at PSV in the 2018/19 group stage and got both goals in a 2-1 victory in London.
