Champions League qualifying play-offs second leg: LASK vs Celtic facts

Celtic take a 3-0 cushion to Austria to face LASK for the second leg of their qualifying play-off as they look to reach the UEFA Champions League proper for the fourth time in five seasons against opponents who have never got that far.

Martin O'Neill's side ran out comfortable winners at Celtic Park on 19 August thanks to goals from Benjamin Nygren (26) and two from Camilo Durán (38 67).

That was the teams' first meeting in UEFA competition.

LASK's record in six matches against Scottish opposition is now W1 D2 L3, their sole victory coming in their last encounter before the first leg of this tie – 2-0 at St Johnstone in the second leg of the 2021/22 UEFA Conference League qualifying play off to seal a 3-1 aggregate success.

That made the Austrian club's record in two-legged ties against Scottish clubs W1 L1.

LASK have never won at home to Scottish visitors (D2 L1), scoring four goals and conceding five.

The first leg was only Celtic's fourth win in their 14 matches against Austrian opposition (D3 L7), but did make it two in a row after a 2-1 home success against Sturm Graz in the league phase of last season's UEFA Europa League.

That ended the Hoops' six-game run – and three successive losses – without a win against Austrian opponents (D3 L3).

LASK 

This is only LASK's third European Cup campaign. They lost 2-5 on aggregate against Górnik Zabrze in the 1965/66 preliminary round and reached the qualifying play-offs in 2019/20, beating Basel 5-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round before going down 1-3 to Club Brugge at this stage (0-1 h, 1-2 a).

LASK would be the fifth Austrian club to feature in the Champions League proper, after Salzburg, Sturm, Rapid Wien and Austria Wien.

The Hoops are aiming to reach the Champions League group stage/league phase for the 14th time.

The Glasgow club are in the qualifying play-offs for the second season in a row, losing 2-3 on penalties to Kairat Almaty 12 months ago after two goalless matches.

That made Celtic's overall record at this stage W4 L4. They have not successfully negotiated Champions League qualifying since 2017/18, subsequently suffering five qualifying eliminations.

The Austrian club were 35th in the league phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Conference League – their last European campaign.

This is LASK's seventh European campaign in the last nine seasons having not featured between 2000 and 2018.

After losing to Kairat in last season's qualifying play-offs, Celtic went on to reach the Europa League knockout phase play-offs, going down 2-4 against Stuttgart.

Celtic have now won five of their last 16 European matches, losing six.

The Glasgow club have also lost only three of their last 13 matches in Champions League qualifying (W6 D4).
