Coach: Iñigo Pérez

A midfielder who reached the 2011/12 Europa League final with Athletic Club, Iñigo Pérez initially assisted his former Athletic Club team-mate Andoni Iraola at Rayo Vallecano, then took sole command in 2024. He helped the Madrid club earn a European place, and took them to the 2025/26 Conference League final before switching to Villarreal.

Key player: Georges Mikautadze

Mikautadze made his name in France with Metz and Lyon before joining Villarreal last summer. His first season was a huge success, the forward ending the campaign as the Yellow Submarine’s top scorer with 13 La Liga goals. He headed into 2026/27 with 23 goals in 43 games for Georgia too - an even better international strike rate than his compatriot Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Big summer signing: Nathan Saliba

The Yellow Submarine added a third Canadian to their squad by capturing the midfielder from Anderlecht. The 22-year-old made his name in his home country with CF Montréal before moving to Belgium in June 2025, scoring five times in his 45 appearances in his sole season at Anderlecht. A regular for his country, Saliba was on target in the 2026 World Cup before his switch to Villarreal.

One to watch: Alberto Moleiro

A regular in the top two tiers of Spanish football with Las Palmas for four seasons, the Tenerife-born winger also shone in his first campaign with Villarreal by grabbing a career-high ten league goals. Still only 22 at the start of 2026/27, a first Spain cap cannot be far away.

Villarreal's 2025/26 season

While they failed to win in their eight league phase games in the Champions League, they finished third in La Liga in their final season under Marcelino. Home form was key, particularly in the run-in where they plundered 25 goals in their last eight league games in front of their own fans.
