With the UEFA Champions League resuming this week, UEFA.com examines how the last-16 clubs have got on since matchday six – and finds both Bayern and Juventus in sparkling shape.

Basel v Manchester City

Basel
Since matchday six: WLWW
Winter break: 17 December to 4 February
Where they stand: 2nd in Super League, Swiss Cup semi-finals

  • Basel lost three of their first eight league games this season, one more defeat than in the whole of 2016/17 – but before losing 1-0 to Lugano in their opening match of 2018, they hadn't lost in the competition since 20 September (W8 D3).

Manchester City

Where they stand: 1st in Premier League, FA Cup last 16, League Cup final

  • Josep Guardiola's team were unbeaten in their first 22 league games this term before losing 4-3 at Liverpool on 14 January. Since then, they have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, building a 16-point lead in the Premier League.

Juventus

Where they stand: 2nd in Serie A, Coppa Italia semi-finals

  • Juventus drew their first game after matchday six but have won the last 11 in all competitions since. They now stand just a single point behind Napoli as they aim to clinch a seventh consecutive Serie A crown.

Tottenham

Real Madrid v Paris Saint-Germain

Where they stand: 3rd in Liga

  • In December, Madrid clinched the FIFA Club World Cup for a third time, matching Barcelona's record. Their domestic form has been inconsistent, however, with Zinédine Zidane's men suffering a shock Copa del Rey exit to Leganés in the quarter-finals.

Paris Saint-Germain

Winter break: 20 December to 7 January
Where they stand: 1st in Ligue 1, Coupe de France quarter-finals, League Cup final

  • All three Paris defeats this season have come away from home – at Strasbourg and Lyon in Ligue 1, and Bayern in the UEFA Champions League group stage. They are currently on a run of six wins in all competitions.

Porto v Liverpool

Where they stand: 1st in Liga, Portuguese Cup semi-finals

  • The Dragons are 23 games unbeaten in normal time (though they lost on penalties to Sporting CP in the Portuguese League Cup semis on 24 January) and their 5-2 victory against Monaco on matchday six heralded a ten-match winning streak.

Liverpool

Where they stand: 3rd in Premier League

  • Liverpool have lost five matches this term in all competitions, although the defeat by West Brom in the FA Cup fourth round on 27 January was their first at Anfield.

Bayern v Beşiktaş

Where they stand: 1st in Bundesliga, German Cup semi-finals

  • Bayern have won their last 12 competitive fixtures, and 14 of their last 15 in the Bundesliga. Robert Lewandowski has led the way with 26 goals in 31 games in all competitions.

Beşiktaş

Winter break: 28 December to 17 January
Where they stand: 4th in Süper Lig, Turkish Cup semi-finals

  • Beşiktaş won just two of their first six fixtures after matchday six but have steadied themselves since. Talisca has scored seven in their last six games (W5 D1).

Chelsea v Barcelona

Where they stand: 4th in Premier League, FA Cup last 16

  • The Londoners lost their first game after matchday six, 1-0 at West Ham on 9 December, but then went on a 12-match unbeaten run on all fronts (W6 D6) before losing their League Cup semi-final second leg at Arsenal and then tasting defeat in consecutive Premier League outings.

Barcelona

Where they stand: 1st in Liga, Copa del Rey final

  • Ernesto Valverde's men suffered a first defeat since August when they succumbed 1-0 at Espanyol in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on 17 January; they won the return leg 2-0 before seeing off Valencia to reach the final.

Shakhtar v Roma

Where they stand: 1st in Super League, Ukrainian Cup semi-finals

  • The Pitmen went into their winter break following a 2-1 loss at Zorya and have had to prepare for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage with a series of friendlies, their league duties resuming against Chornomorets on 16 February.

Roma

Where they stand: 4th in Serie A

  • Roma endured a run of seven matches without a win from 20 December to 28 January, but they finally had a victory to cheer when they prevailed 1-0 at Verona at the start of the month – following up with a morale-boosting 5-2 success against Benevento on Sunday.

Sevilla v Manchester United

Where they stand: 6th in Liga, Copa del Rey final

  • Sevilla have lost five of their 15 fixtures since matchday six, conceding five goals in three of those defeats. Nevertheless, they will face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final in April after dispatching Leganés in the last four. 

Manchester United

  • United won only two of their first seven matches in all competitions after matchday six. They have won six of their last eight since, though two of their last three matches have ended in defeat.
