Parma help complete picture

Parma FC were among the eight teams to book their place in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 on Thursday night.

Parma FC were among the eight teams to book their place in Friday's UEFA Cup Round of 32 draw when the final fixtures in Groups A-D were completed on Thursday evening.

Lineup complete
FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, FC Schalke 04, Feyenoord and Newcastle United FC were assured of their progress before tonight's action, but Parma defeated Besiktas JK 3-1 to follow suit while seven other sides secured their progress and joined the 12 qualifiers from Groups E-H and the eight third-placed sides from the UEFA Champions League.

Carmignani delight
Parma fought back from conceding inside the first six minutes as Alberto Gilardino, Giuseppe Cardone and Daniele Degano scored the Italian side's goals to seal victory for Pietro Carmignani in his first game back as coach at the Stadio Ennio Tardini. Athletic Club Bilbao topped the group with an emphatic 7-1 win against R. Standard de Liège, Santiago Ezquerro leading the scoring spree with a hat-trick. FC Steaua Bucuresti, who were ensured of qualification, take second spot.

Forlorn Ferencváros
César Carignano scored the only goal of the game as FC Basel 1893 defeated section winners Feyenoord in Group A to take third spot. That meant disappointment for Ferencvárosi TC, who were eliminated despite beating Heart of Midlothian FC 1-0 through a Dénes Rósa strike. Schalke, who had already completed their fixtures, finished second.

Brugge broken
In Group C, FK Austria Wien qualified in third place as goals from Libor Sionko and Sigurd Rushfeldt gave them a 2-1 win at FC Utrecht. The victory eliminated Club Brugge KV, despite the Belgian club securing a 1-1 draw at home to Real Zaragoza. That result means the Spanish club had to be content with second as Dnipro finished in top spot.

Custódio header
Newcastle secured first place in Group D as they drew 1-1 at home against Sporting Clube de Portugal at St James' Park. Welsh striker Craig Bellamy scored after just five minutes before Custódio equalised as half-time approached. With FC Sochaux-Montbéliard defeating Panionios NFC 1-0 thanks to a late Mickaël Isabey goal, Sporting took the third qualifying spot and the French club finished second.

Friday draw
The draw for the next two rounds will take place at 13.45CET on Friday. Each group winner will face a third-placed side from another group in the Round of 32, which takes place over two legs in February 2005. The runners-up from each pool will play one of the teams that finished third in the eight Champions League groups.
