Switzerland will play at the UEFA Women's EURO finals for the first time after clinching their place during June's qualifiers alongside England, Norway and Spain to emulate holders Germany and France in making it to the Netherlands next summer.

While Switzerland, like Germany and France, have won their groups, a top-two finish is enough for England, Norway and Spain as they will definitely finish as one of the six best runners-up avoiding the play-offs. Top-two group spots were also confirmed by Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Belgium and Austria, to follow in the footsteps of Scotland, though they may yet face the play-off. We round up all the action with only September's qualifiers to come.

Qualified: Netherlands (hosts), Germany (holders), England. France, Norway, Spain, Switzerland
Confirmed at least play-off: Iceland, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Belgium, Austria
Can still qualify: Finland, Portugal, Ukraine, Romania, Italy, Czech Republic, Northern Ireland

• The last qualifying group stage games run from 15–20 September.
• The group winners and the six best runners-up (not counting results against fifth-placed teams) will join hosts the Netherlands in the final tournament from 16 July–6 August 2017.
• The other two runners-up will play off over two legs from 17–25 October for the remaining berth in the expanded 16-team finals (after a draw, on 23 September, to determine who is at home in which leg).

Group 1
Iceland
overtook Scotland at the summit when the two sides with 100% records met in Falkirk and the visitors won 4-0. Four days later Iceland joined the Scots in making sure of a top-two finish as they defeated FYR Macedonia 8-0 to end Slovenia's mathematical hopes. Scotland, now level with Iceland on points having played a game more, won 1-0 in Belarus. On 16 September Iceland play Slovenia before welcoming Scotland, on a night when the top two could both seal finals places regardless of the result.

Group 2
Leaders Spain were not in action but results elsewhere ensured their place in the Netherlands. Although Finland beat the Republic of Ireland 4-1, Andrée Jeglertz's side were held 0-0 by Portugal in their other game in hand. Portugal are fourth, but unlike Ireland can still deny Finland second spot since they still having two matches left to make up a six-point deficit. Portugal must overcome Finland on 16 September to have a chance of overtaking them. Finland themselves need to win that fixture and hope Spain do not beat Montenegro to make their 20 September encounter a group decider.

Group 3
France, already in the fnals, broke both a national record and set the highest crowd for a UEFA Women's EURO qualifier when their 1-0 success against Greece was watched by 24,835 in Rennes. In the race for second position, Ukraine eliminated Greece 2-0 to restore their three-point advantage over Romania, 3-0 victors in Albania and still holding a game in hand. Romania face Ukraine on 15 September when the winners will definitely rubber-stamp the runners-up slot. A 0-0 or 1-1 draw, and Romania will be able to ensure at least a play-off by beating Greece five days later.

Group 4
Sweden and Denmark will definitely be the top two in this section after each picked up six points. Sweden, yet to drop a point or concede a goal, prevailed 4-0 in Poland and overcame Moldova 6-0. Denmark won 4-0 against Slovakia and 6-0 versus Poland to end both teams' hopes – but trail fellow 2013 semi-finalists Sweden by five points with two matches left.

Group 5
With a finals place secured after six straight wins, Germany were not in action but Russia made sure of second position as they triumphed 2-0 against Turkey and 3-0 in Croatia. Hungary, who drew 3-3 in Russia in April, saw their hopes expire with a 2-1 loss in Turkey, the latter getting their first victory of qualifying in their last outing. Russia still have something to play for as they attempt to avoid the play-offs; they host Germany on 16 September and Croatia four days later.

Group 6
Switzerland have reached the UEFA Women's EURO finals for the first time after a comprehensive 5-0 win in the Czech Republic made it maximum points from six games. Italy are twi points above the Czechs after they strolled home 7-0 in Georgia. The Czechs won 3-0 against a team three further points back, Northern Ireland, but were then held 1-1 in the return in a rearranged fixture. That means any of three teams can finish second with Northern Ireland three points behind the Czechs but also having two games left to Italy's one. Northern Ireland welcome Italy on 16 September, four days before the Azzurre entertain the Czech Republic, where they prevailed 3-0 earlier in qualifying. Northern Ireland go to Switzerland the same day.

Group 7
England
and Belgium confirmed their top-two status on Tuesday. Belgium sat things out but had won 5-0 in Estonia on Friday; England made it 7-0 home and away victories against Serbia, eliminating both their opponents and Bosnia and Herzegovina. That result also booked a finals place for England, two points clear, and receiving Estonia on 15 September. Belgium, on the verge of a finals debut, go to Serbia that day before hosting England five days later.

Group 8
Another group where the top two are already known: twice champions Norway and Austria. Norway's perfect start was ended when a late Austrian equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw in Oslo. Finals debut-chasing Austria then dispatched Israel 4-0 but 2013 runners-up Norway secured qualification and are level on points with a game in hand after a 2-0 win in Wales that killed the hosts' hopes. Norway did win in Austria so will make sure of first place by beating either Kazakhstan or Israel in September, regardless of Austria's result in Wales.

The hosts
The Netherlands secured a 2-0 win in Waalwijk against a South Africa team coached by Vera Pauw, who led her home nation to the UEFA Women's EURO 2009 semi-finals. Vivianne Miedema scored both goals to move past 25 at senior international level more than a month before her 20th birthday.
