German champions VfB Stuttgart have signed Romanian international striker Ciprian Marica from Ukrainian side FC Shakhtar Donetsk for an estimated €8m fee.
Five-year deal
The clubs agreed to keep the details of the transfer quiet, but the 21-year-old - who has scored five goals in 15 appearances for Romania - has signed a five-year contract with the UEFA Champions League group-stage contenders just hours after it was confirmed that Mario Gomez had committed to another year with the club. Both forwards are now under contract until 2012.
Heldt thrilled
Stuttgart sporting director Horst Heldt said: "Ciprian is a very flexible forward, and a permanent thorn in the side of any opposition defence, who fits outstandingly into our team. He wanted to join us desperately." The former FC Dinamo 1948 Bucuresti player has scored 16 times in 73 Ukrainian Premier League appearances since joining Shakhtar in the 2003/04 season. As Ukrainian runners-up, Shakhtar start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round.
