Robert Lewandowski has joined the illustrious band of players to have amassed 100 or more appearances in the UEFA Champions League, becoming the competition's 42nd centurion.

The Bayern forward reached the landmark in the German club's 5-2 defeat of Benfica on Matchday 4, a little over ten years after his Champions League debut for Dortmund in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in September 2011. The 33-year-old made his first 28 outings in the competition with BVB before joining Bayern, where he lifted the trophy in 2019/20.

In typical style, the Poland captain marked the occasion of his 100th game by burying a hat-trick. In doing so, he joined an even more exclusive club as just the sixth player to register on his century outing, following the example of Toni Kroos, Andrea Pirlo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thierry Henry.

Lewandowski finished the night with a total of 81 goals in the Champions League, putting him third on the all-time list behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Memorably, he topped the competition scoring charts with 15 in 2019/20, registering in nine consecutive games before being kept quiet in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, decided by Kingsley Coman's header.

The Bayern No9 is the second player to reach three figures this season after Real Madrid defender Marcelo became the 41st overall on Matchday 3.
