UEFA Champions League Matchday 6 brings another heavyweight contest at San Siro as Inter and Liverpool renew acquaintances in Milan after defeats last time out.

Last match

Liverpool have won four of their six games against Inter, who have been victorious in the other two. Mohamed Salah scored the second in a 2-0 win at San Siro in the most recent tie, in the 2021/22 round of 16 first leg; Inter bowed out despite Lautaro Martínez getting the only goal of the Anfield return.

Inter beat Liverpool 4-3 on aggregate (1-3 a, 3-0 h) in the 1964/65 European Cup semi-finals en route to retaining the trophy; the English side were 3-0 winners in the 2007/08 round of 16 (2-0 h, 1-0 a).

Inter have won their last four home group stage/league phase games against English visitors, most recently defeating Arsenal 1-0 on Matchday 4 last season.

Liverpool have won their last three matches against Italian teams, beating Bologna 2-0 at Anfield on Matchday 2 last season.

The Reds have won five of their last six Champions League group stage/league phase games against Serie A sides (L1), including a 3-1 success against AC Milan on Matchday 1 in 2024/25.

The win in Milan made it five victories in Liverpool's last six away games against Italian clubs (L1).

Inter

This is the Nerazzurri's 19th appearance in the Champions League, and an eighth in succession.

Inter reached a second final in three seasons in 2024/25, but went down 0-5 against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich – the biggest final defeat in European Cup history.

Liverpool

This is Liverpool's 17th Champions League campaign; they have reached the final five times, lifting the trophy in 2005 and 2019.

The Merseysiders were first in last season's league phase (W7 L1) but went out on penalties to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

Key stats

Inter won their first four league phase games this season but lost the fifth, 2-1 at Atlético de Madrid – only their second defeat in 19 matches at this stage (W13 D4). They have won ten of the last 12 (L2) and kept 11 clean sheets in the last 14.

The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in 18 home Champions League games (W15 D3), since a 0-2 group stage defeat against Bayern München in September 2022.

Inter have won ten of their last 11 home group stage/league phase games (D1), conceding only two goals.

Martínez has scored in his last five home Champions League appearances, eight goals in total.

A 1-4 defeat by PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 5 ended Liverpool's 16-game winning streak at home in European group stage/league phase games and equalled their biggest defeat at Anfield in UEFA competition.

The Merseyside club have won seven of their last nine away European games (L2) and have scored in 11 of the last 12.

None of Liverpool's last 31 European group stage/league phase matches has finished in a draw.

Mohamed Salah needs two goals to become the first African to score 50 in the Champions League.
