For the second successive UEFA Champions League fixture Atlético de Madrid take on German opposition as Bayern München come to Spain on Matchday 4 with both sides held to draws last time out.

Previous meetings

Bayern have won four of the sides' eight matches to Atleti's two. Their first meetings were their most significant, Bayern winning 4-0 in the 1974 European Cup final replay – the only decider to go to a second game – to claim their first title two days after a 1-1 draw.

Bayern are unbeaten in their last three games against Atleti (W2 D1), most recently winning 4-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away in the 2020/21 group stage.

Atleti are, however, unbeaten in their three home matches against Bayern (W2 D1), all in the Champions League: 1-0 in the 2015/16 semi-final first leg (1-2 a, Atleti won on away goals), 1-0 in the 2016/17 group stage and 1-1 in the 2020/21 group stage.

The Spanish side are unbeaten in 16 home matches against Bundesliga visitors (W12 D4), since a 0-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the 1996/97 group stage. They have won their last four, most recently 5-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 2 last season.

Atleti have not kept a clean sheet in their last 12 matches against German opposition, drawing 1-1 at Stuttgart on Matchday 3.

Bayern's last contests against a Spanish club came against Real Madrid in last season's quarter-finals (2-1 a, 4-3 h). They have lost only three of their last 16 matches against Liga teams (W9 D4).

Club history

Atlético de Madrid

Atlético are making their 17th appearance in the Champions League proper and a 14th in succession. They have featured every season since 2013/14.

Runners-up in 2014 and 2016, both against Real Madrid, Diego Simeone's side lost 1-2 on aggregate against Arsenal in last season's semi-finals, their best run since 2016/17, when they had been eliminated by Madrid at the same stage. Fourteenth in the league phase (W4 D1 L3), Atleti subsequently overcame Club Brugge (7-4 aggregate), Tottenham (7-5) and Barcelona (3-2) before going out to the Gunners.

Bayern

Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds every time.

This is Bayern's 30th campaign in the Champions League proper, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 31).

Second in last season's league phase (W7 L1), the German club beat Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 and Real Madrid 6-4 in the last eight before losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals (4-5 a, 1-1 h).
