Bayern are unbeaten in their four games against Sporting, recording three wins and one draw while scoring 13 goals and conceding only one. The teams' most recent meetings came in the 2008/09 Champions League round of 16, Bayern triumphing 12-1 on aggregate – still the biggest win in a knockout tie – after winning 5-0 in Lisbon and 7-1 in Munich.
The teams also met in the 2006/07 group stage, Bayern winning 1-0 in Portugal before a goalless draw in Germany.
Bayern have lost just two of their 31 games against Portuguese opposition, recording 20 wins and nine draws, and are unbeaten at home (W13 D2). A 1-0 win against Benfica in Munich on Matchday 4 last season made it five successive victories, home and away.
Sporting have won just one of their 17 away games in Germany, losing 14, their sole success 3-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 1 of the 2022/23 Champions League.
Sporting's 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund in last season's knockout phase play-offs second leg confirmed a 0-3 aggregate defeat, the 3-0 first-leg loss in Lisbon having been their third in succession against German teams, home and away, and one of eight in Sporting's last 11 games (W2 D1).
Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds every time. This is their 29th campaign, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 30).
Twelfth in last season's league phase (W5 L3), the German club eventually lost 3-4 on aggregate to Inter in the quarter-finals.
The Lions are making their 12th appearance in the Champions League proper, and a fourth in five seasons.
Sporting were 23rd in last season's league phase (W3 D2 L3), bowing out against Dortmund in the knockout phase play-offs (0-3 h, 0-0 a).
Key stats
Having won their first four games in this season's league phase, Bayern were beaten 3-1 at Arsenal – who had also won four out of four – on Matchday 5.
That was only Bayern's fourth defeat in their last 53 games in the group stage/league phase (W45 D4).
Bayern are unbeaten in 36 home matches in the group stage/league phase, recording 34 wins and 2 draws since a 2-3 defeat by Manchester City in December 2013.
Only one of Bayern's last 74 European games finished goalless.
Harry Kane has 16 goals in 15 home appearances for Bayern in the Champions League including two against Chelsea (3-1) and one against Club Brugge (4-0) this season.
A 3-0 win at home to Club Brugge on Matchday 5 means Sporting have three victories in their last six Champions League games (D2 L1).
The Portuguese side have scored in their last 21 European matches.
Sporting have opened the scoring in four of their five league phase matches this season.
