1983/84: Parks keeps Anderlecht at bay

RSC Anderlecht 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur FC

FC Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 RSC Anderlecht
(Czerniatynski 60; Roberts 84)
(agg 2-2 aet, Tottenham win 4-3 on penalties)

The dreaded lottery of penalties decided the outcome of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup competition – with Tottenham Hotspur FC holding the winning ticket in the first final shoot-out. Tony Parks's save from Arnor Gudjohnsen secured victory over RSC Anderlecht after the tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate. The Belgian side had looked set to retain the trophy when Alex Czerniatynski scored an hour into the second leg at White Hart Lane. But a late Graham Roberts equaliser in a 1-1 draw, added to the goalkeeping heroics of Parks, ensured otherwise.

The London side's second UEFA Cup success was reward for an impressive campaign in which they had accounted for Drogheda United FC, Feyenoord, FC Bayern München, FK Austria Wien and HNK Hajduk Split, on away goals in the semi-final. Yet their opponents had also excelled. Bryne FK, FC Baník Ostrava, RC Lens and FC Spartak Moskva could testify to that.

Anderlecht's efforts would, however, be overshadowed then totally eclipsed by the rumours of foul play surrounding their semi-final win over Nottingham Forest FC. The English team conceded a dubious penalty and had a goal disallowed as they crashed 3-0 in Brussels to lose out 3-2 on aggregate. Anderlecht would later be found guilty for their part in the bribery scandal, and banned for a year from European competition.
