The first silverware of the new European season will be decided at Stadion Salzburg as UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain take on Aston Villa, who lifted the UEFA Europa League in 2025/26, in the UEFA Super Cup.
Both sides are aiming to claim the trophy for the second time. Paris were victorious in the 2025 edition, while Villa triumphed in 1982. The winners will be the 12th club to win multiple Super Cups.
Super Cup pedigree
Paris became the 26th team to lift the Super Cup by coming from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties at Stadio Friuli in Udine on 13 August 2025. Late goals from substitutes Kang-in Lee (85) and Gonçalo Ramos (90+4) forced a shoot-out, where Vitinha missed Paris' first kick only before Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, Lee and, decisively, Nuno Mendes all converted.
That was the 50th edition of the Super Cup; Paris were the first French winners.
Paris' only other appearance came in the 1996 edition – although both games were played early in 1997 – when, as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup holders, they lost 2-9 on aggregate to Juventus (1-6 h, 1-3 a).
Les Parisiens are the only French club to feature in the Super Cup.
Only two clubs have won successive Super Cups; AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 and Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.
Luis Enrique is aiming for his third Super Cup as coach, having guided Barcelona (2015) and Paris (2025) to the trophy. Carlo Ancelotti (five) and Pep Guardiola (four) are the only coaches to win more than two.
The European Cup holders have won 30 of the 50 Super Cups.
Villa beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate in their sole previous Super Cup appearance in 1982, with both games taking place in January 1983. The English club overturned a 1-0 first-leg loss at the Camp Nou with a 3-0 extra-time win at Villa Park thanks to goals from Gary Shaw (80), Gordon Cowans (100) and Ken McNaught (104) in a game Villa finished with ten men and Barça nine.
England's ten Super Cup triumphs – shared between six clubs – is the second most in the competition, behind Spain's 17. This is England's 22nd Super Cup appearance, also second to Spain (32).
Should Villa triumph, the 44-year gap since their first win would be the longest in Super Cup history; the record is currently shared by Liverpool and Valencia, who have both lifted the trophy 24 years apart.
Villa are aiming to become the first Europa League holders to win the Super Cup since Atlético de Madrid in 2018.
This is Unai Emery's fourth Super Cup as coach. He was a runner-up with Sevilla in 2014 and 2015 and Villarreal in 2021.
Previous meetings
The teams' only other fixtures came in the 2024/25 Champions League quarter-final, Paris progressing 5-4 on aggregate. Enrique's side were 3-1 first-leg winners at the Parc des Princes with Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Mendes all on target, and held on despite a 3-2 second-leg loss in Birmingham in which early goals from Achraf Hakimi and Mendes were overturned by Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Ezri Konsa.

In 2025/26, Paris became only the second club in the Champions League era to defend the title, after Real Madrid's three successive wins between 2016 and 2018.
Enrique's side beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Budapest on 30 May.
Eleventh in the league phase, Paris went on to defeat Monaco (5-4 aggregate), Chelsea (8-2), Liverpool (4-0) and Bayern München (6-5) in the knockout phase before edging out Arsenal.
Enrique became the first Spanish coach since José Villalonga (Real Madrid 1956, 1957) to win back-to-back European Cups.
Villa claimed their third piece of European silverware in 2025/26, beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final in Istanbul on 20 May.
The Villans had finished second in the league phase, defeating LOSC Lille (3-0 aggregate), Bologna (7-1) and fellow English side Nottingham Forest (4-1) to reach the final.
Villa became the 31st different winners of the UEFA Cup/Europa League, and the sixth from England. They were the third new champions in six seasons, after Atalanta (2023/24) and Emery's Villarreal (2020/21).
Emery is the most successful coach in UEFA Cup/Europa League history with five titles (Sevilla 2014, 2015, 2016, Villarreal 2021, Aston Villa 2026). He is also the first coach to win the competition with three different clubs.
