Coach: Unai Emery

The former Real Sociedad and Toledo midfielder underlined his extraordinary record in the UEFA Europa League by winning the competition for the fifth time with Villa last season, following three successes with Sevilla and one at Villarreal. In charge at Villa Park since 2022, he took the club to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2024/25, where they lost to eventual winners Paris.

Key player: Boubacar Kamara

"One of the best midfielders in Europe", according to Villa captain John McGinn. Frenchman Kamara is Villa's humble, unassuming star, a player who makes those around him better and does the simple things exceptionally well. The club's win rate with him in the team since he arrived from Marseille in January 2022 is close to 60%; without him it drops to 40%.

Big summer signing: Johan Manzambi

A member of the Freiburg team defeated by Villa in last season's Europa League final, Manzambi scooped the competition's Revelation of the Season award for his impressive part in the German club's landmark campaign. The young forward carried that form into the summer's World Cup, finishing as Switzerland’s three-goal top scorer and providing two assists.

One to watch: Ibrahim Mbaye

Still only 18, Mbaye moved to Birmingham on deadline day after two seasons as part of the Paris Saint-Germain squad that have won back-to-back Champions League titles. Paris' youngest-ever starter, the versatile right winger became the youngest-ever African to score at a World Cup this summer and links up with Senegal team-mate Nicolas Jackson at Villa.

Aston Villa's 2025/26 season

After a slow start, an eight-game winning streak (their best top-flight run since 1910) was among the highlights of a fine Premier League campaign, in which Emery's side finished fourth. The Villans beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final to win their first continental title since the 1981/82 European Cup.

What is Aston Villa's best Champions League finish?

Europa League winners in 2025/26, Aston Villa were European Cup winners in 1981/82. They reached the 2024/25 quarter-finals in their best performance of the Champions League era.
