Coach: Diego Simeone
Now in his 16th season at the helm (he arrived in December 2011), Simeone has qualified for the last 14 editions of the Champions League. As well as winning two La Liga titles with Atleti, he has also led the club to two Europa League victories, two UEFA Super Cups, and two Champions League finals. The ultimate European crown has evaded him so far, though, with last season's semi-final finish another near miss, and it is still the one big trophy missing from his cabinet.
Key player: Julián Alvarez
After making an impressive impact in his first season for the club with seven Champions League goals (29 in all competitions), Alvarez underlined his status as Atleti's key man in 2025/26. La Araña (the Spider), who was previously prolific at River Plate and Manchester City, scored ten Champions League goals and created four assists, and is perennially at the heart of everything positive for his side going forward.
Big summer signing: Morten Hjulmand
The 27-year-old defensive midfielder appears tailor-made for Simeone's Champions League regulars. A star at Austrian side Admira Wacker and then Lecce, where he won the Serie B title and became their captain aged just 23, he moved to Sporting CP in 2023. The 2024 Danish footballer of the Year played 20 Champions League games for the Portuguese outfit in the past two seasons.
One to watch: Rodrigo Mendoza
The 21-year-old midfielder helped Elche climb back into the Spanish top flight before heading for Atleti in February 2026. A regular in several Spain teams across the youth age groups, the Under-21 international made ten appearances for the capital club in his first half a season under Simeone.
Atleti's 2025/26 season
In what was forward Antoine Griezmann's last campaign with the club, Atleti finished fourth in the Spanish table, were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals and lost to Real Sociedad on penalties in the final of the Copa del Rey.
What is Atleti's best Champions League finish?
Atleti have won the Europa League (2009/10, 2011/12 and 2017/18), the Cup Winners' Cup (1961/62) and the UEFA Super Cup (2010, 2012, 2018), but have yet to win the Champions League. They were runners-up in 1973/74, 2013/14 and 2015/16.

Atleti winger Giuliano Simeone is the son of coach Diego Simeone; one of Simeone's other sons, Giovanni, plays for Italian side Torino.
